Tanda discussion

This time I'll discuss some tandas I played at NOU tango in Berlin.

First a great Francisco Canaro / Ernesto Famá tanda. A very known combination, but in this case some rather unknown but yet great recordings:

  • Si soy así - Orquesta Francisco Canaro con Ernesto Famá - 3:13 - 1933 - Tango
    Adiós Muchachos 1926-1938 - Harlequin (HQCD-169)
  • Bernabé, la fiera - Orquesta Francisco Canaro con Ernesto Famá - 1932 - Tango
Francisco Canaro en la decada del '30 Vol. 5 - San Telmo - AMP (CD-1107)
  • Hipólito Irigóyen - Orquesta Francisco Canaro con Ernesto Famá - 1933 - Tango
Francisco Canaro en la decada del '30 Vol. 10 - Alma De Bandoneón - AMP (CD-1257)
  • Campanas de bronce - Orquesta Francisco Canaro con Ernesto Famá - 1933 - Tango
Francisco Canaro en la decada del '30 Vol. 10 - Alma De Bandoneón - AMP (CD-1257)

It is a great and driving set of Canaro tangos starting with "Si soy así" being a funny and very rhythmic tango. It can be found on a BATC CD, but in better quality on this Harlequin CD. The second one is rather known, whereas "Hipólito Irigóyen" and "Campanas de bronce" are quite rare and unknown tracks. The latter being one of my most surprising gems I discovered recently for me being on the same level as an "Invierno" (less romantic but more rhythmic).

Maybe the most controversial tanda was this milonga candombe tanda:

  • El tucu-tun - Orquesta Enrique Rodríguez con Armando Moreno - 2:33 - 1943 - Milonga Candombe - Recordando sus Éxitos - Enrique Rodríguez y su orquesta, canta Armando Moreno - Reliquias (541704)
  • Tamboriles - Orquesta Enrique Rodríguez con Oscar Galán - 2:20 - 1956 - Milonga Candombe - Enrique Rodríguez Vol. 13 (1956-1959) - CdT
  • Color punzo - Orquesta Enrique Rodríguez con Armando Moreno - 2:24 - 1967 - Milonga Candombe - Enrique Rodríguez Vol. 16 (1967-1969) - CdT

First there is always the question if a milonga candombe should be played in the first place. Second these three are rhythmically very interesting ones, but at least the last two very unknown to the dancers. The power of these tracks is increasing from "El tucu-tun" 1943 to "Color punzo" 1967. Some people were eager to know what candombes have been played and liked them a lot, but overall I had the feeling that this tanda was a bit "too much" for a regular milonga event.

For situations where you want to play some slow milongas, but you have to avoid the known and lovely Canaro milongas, you might consider playing a tango milonga set like this:

  • El chiflado (El Chiflao) - Cuarteto Típico "Los Ases" - 2:54 - 1941 - Tango Milonga
    Cuarteto Típico "Los Ases" (1940-1942) - (CTA-213)
  • Ivette - Cuarteto Típico "Los Ases" - 2:59 - 1941 - Tango Milonga
    Cuarteto Típico "Los Ases" (1940-1942) - (CTA-213)
  • Entrada prohibida - Cuarteto Típico "Los Ases" - 2:47 - 1940 - Tango
    Cuarteto Típico "Los Ases" (1940-1942) - (CTA-213)

I found myself in this situation when DJ-ing a tango marathon as last DJ after all the known slow milongas have been played two or three times a day/night.

I am looking forward to reading your feedback about this - let my know your ideas! (Please mind the new possibility to leave your comment on the website where this newsletter is published online)

Recommended upcoming international tango events

One of my favorite events each year:

There is the lovely regular Thursday milonga beforehand, on Friday you may choose out of various local milongas, the big saturday night birthday milonga lasting for up to 12 hours and a Sunday afternoon milonga afterwards. No registration necessary, just come and enjoy!

Of course there are plenty of special events during christmas and New Year! For some you have to be fast in order to get a ticket, for others you are too late already.. ;)

CD-reviews & news

42 Fresedo CDs

Finally the tracklistings of 42 Osvaldo Fresedo CDs are processed and online:

Despite these 42 Fresedo CDs I continue do miss a lot of the ~1230 recordings being listed in the discography of Fresedo. I wonder how to get hold of those..

Preview: In the end of November, beginning of December I expect to be able to receive the rest of the Canaro collection (~120CDs) as well as 31 Firpo CDs. I know already that plenty of very interesting and yet unknown gems are waiting to be discovered here..

Sondor CDs

Almost all Sondor CDs are out of stock again. (I am trying to get a new delivery.) Then another three tracklistings of Sondor CDs could be added. Please find them on my page of Sondor CDs.

Tangos para la historia 1944-1948 - Grandes Orquestas Típicas Uruguayas

Candombes - Tangos y Paso Dobles Uruguayos - Julio Arregui

El Tango, La Milonga - Pepe Guerra

CTA-news

CTA should be open again, I'll place a new order of CTA CDs within the next two weeks. So please let me know your order in case you are interested in buying some CTA-CDs.

Update of CTA-CDs not available any more:

  • CTA-111, Orquesta Típica Victor Vol. 11

Preview: I was able to buy some CTA CDs from a collector. Most likely I'll receive them in the end of November. If everything is ok with those CDs I will make a special offer to mailinglist-recipients only! First come first served.

Old World Tangos Vol. 1 to 3 (label Oriente Musik)

Due to a mistake this article was not published in my last newsletter why it is included again here:

Talk shopping tango stuff with Julian Ingram he pointed me to these CDs published under Oriente Musik. If you are interested in what was going on in Europe tangowise this is one of the best places to start your research! These CDs feature booklets up to 40 pages being even stronger than the Harlequin ones, translated in up to three languages giving extensive information about the artists and recordings throughout Europe. The overall quality of this product is exceptional.
I do not understand why people are paying (and therefore asking for) bad quality mp3 files getting hardly any information and a small cover picture for more or less the same money they could get an album like this one with a booklet of 40 pages and extensive information about the music and artists. I am very much afraid that labels will do less and less effort in creating products like this if customers are fine with some 0.99 EUR mp3 (not even with a given bitrate, but just any) and a small picture as cover. And even worse thinking that this is a bargain.
You may find tracklistings of these CDs and a pdf-document of a scanned booklet on my page for various lables.

Old World Tangos Vol. 1 - Echoes from afar - Oriente Musik RIEN CD 20
(Booklet of 20 pages)

Old World Tangos Vol. 2 - Tango alla Romanesque - Oriente Musik RIEN CD 40
(Booklet of 12 pages)

Old World Tangos Vol. 3 - Polskie Tango 1929-1939 - Oriente Musik RIEN CD 55

(Booklet of 40 pages!)

Beautiful non-tango "Beautiful tango" by Zahra Hindi

I happend to hear this beautiful non-tango "Beautiful tango" which can be found on the album "Handmade" by Zahra Hindi. Despite the fact that the trend is going to traditional tangos everywhere (which I appreciate a lot) I want to recommend this CD including this lovely track "Beautiful tango" which can be perfectly be played and danced as a special/non-tango. Also "Oursoul", "Set me free" and "At the same time" could be used as a danceable non-tango.

And if you do not want to use it for dancing, it's a lovely CD to listen to, too! :)
